Accessibility Statement
Last updated: 4 April 2026
LOKATE is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards.
1. Conformance Status
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. Conformance with these guidelines helps make the web more user-friendly for everyone.
2. Measures We Take
LOKATE takes the following measures to ensure accessibility:
Perceivable
- Text alternatives: All meaningful images and icons have alt text or ARIA labels.
- Colour contrast: Text and interactive elements meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratios (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text).
- Colour independence: Information is not conveyed by colour alone. Walking route difficulty uses text labels alongside coloured badges.
- Responsive design: The app and website adapt to all screen sizes from 320px to large desktop displays.
- Text resizing: Content remains usable when text is resized up to 200%.
Operable
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard. Tab, Enter, Space, and Escape keys work as expected.
- Focus indicators: Visible focus outlines (orange, 3px) appear on all focusable elements.
- Skip navigation: A "Skip to main content" link is provided on all pages.
- No time limits: There are no automatic time-outs on content pages. The timed check-in feature is user-initiated and can be dismissed at any time.
- Reduced motion: Animations are disabled when the user has enabled "Reduce Motion" in their operating system settings.
- Touch targets: All buttons and interactive elements meet the minimum 44x44 pixel touch target size recommended by Apple and Google.
Understandable
- Language: The page language is declared in HTML (
lang="en"). - Clear labels: Form inputs have visible labels and helpful error messages.
- Consistent navigation: Navigation is consistent across all pages. The bottom navigation bar maintains the same order throughout the app.
- Error prevention: Destructive actions (sending help alerts, deleting contacts, logging out) require confirmation.
- Plain language: Content is written in clear, simple English appropriate for an international audience.
Robust
- Semantic HTML: The website uses proper HTML5 semantic elements (header, nav, main, section, article, footer).
- ARIA attributes: ARIA labels, roles, and states are used where native HTML semantics are insufficient.
- Browser compatibility: The app works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on desktop and mobile.
- Screen reader support: The website is tested with common screen readers (VoiceOver on iOS/macOS, TalkBack on Android).

4. Known Limitations
We are aware of the following accessibility limitations and are working to address them:
- Flutter Web rendering: Flutter uses CanvasKit to render the app, which can affect screen reader compatibility compared to native HTML. We continue to monitor and improve this.
- Third-party content: Some embedded content (Google Maps links) may have accessibility limitations beyond our control.
- User-generated content: Photos uploaded by users may not always have descriptive alt text.
